Moulding our own bodies: How making clothing from food waste has brought artist Hannah Skevington closer to body acceptance

Moulding our own bodies

Artists and Designer, Hannah Skevington, explores her complicated relationship with body acceptance through the unconventional use of food waste as a textile material. A defiant assertion against what is deemed ‘acceptable’ by society.

In response to the Chaos issue, I have channelled my personal struggle with body acceptance into my own conceptual work that aims to explore fashion and societies chaotic obsession with the ideal female body shape, size and autonomy.

Using my own biomaterial made from food waste as the textile, I have created a series of conceptual wearable sculptures that shows the sensitive and dark relationship women have with their bodies which is often driven by cultures and medias pressure to look a certain way.

I am interested in reasserting women’s bodily autonomy, embracing all body characteristics from drooping breasts, bloating stomachs to dimpled butts.
